The Creepy Side Of E3

You might not have heard about the security guard that groped a journalist at this year’s E3. Or the writer who gave a PR woman his business card by slipping it in her dress. Or the women presumed to be booth babes simply because of the way they looked.

E3 is the busiest time to be working in the games industries or as a reporter covering the scene. It’s the biggest, most important event of the year. But with roughly 50,000 attendees, it’s also sometimes the creepiest.

This is a very disappointing read that highlighting the various issues women in the video game industry have to endure. They endure everything from the mostly harmless but frustrating, “So to you play games” and “Are you a booth babe” to cases of mistreatment, talking down to and creepy-rapey stuff. It’s a disappointing story that needs to be more out in the open, gamers of any gender should not tolerate this kind of behavior.

I’d also like to add the societal expectation to not express emotion, which may be tied to “masculinity”. This leads men to being three times more likely to have addictions to alcohol and twice as likely to have a drug addiction and ten times more likely to commit a murder. If men had a way to express their emotions without ridicule i’m sure those numbers would balance out.

ok i’ll probably- take this off later as i do with a lot of personal posts i just type out in the moment but i just gotta’ say, while i appreciate the sentiment and agree that the portrayal of ‘beauty’ in the media is definitely waaay obscured (who wouldn’t?) dove realizes art directors and graphic designers rarely make the decision when it comes to what photos are going to be retouched? sure, they could simply reject the job; it’s certainly something i’d never want to do but as someone hoping to get into the industry i realize it’s a tough market and you gotta’ get bread on the table. promoting a healthier image is great, it’s wonderful, but don’t make graphic designers the villains. talk about their bosses, the companies; don’t go we’re calling you out for something you had no decision in!! enjoy having to redo this entire thing in order to pay for your cost of living, shame on u.

on the other hand what they’re trying to promote is most definitely a good thing so i’m not in defense of photo retouching for ads at all, but— it’s like? let me explain 2 u a thing dove

sorry to those who disagree too because i can totally see this argument both ways i just??? maybe if you’re making a living off of retouching only, but that’s rarely the case?

If Dove wants to “speak directly to those responsible for for manipulating our perceptions” maybe they should talk to their brother company, who made this ad…and many that are far worse.

Dove is at best trying to redefine beauty as a small deviations from average one direction or the other. It kind of the same thing as people who say, “I don’t like skinny chicks because I’m not shallow and l like a full figured woman.”
No, you’re shallow because you are choosing one person’s physical appearance over another, regardless whether are not you are going against the norm, you are still objectifying women.
Still,
I’m always dubious of a corporation’s intentions because they never do anything unless it can get more money, In Dove’s case, they have made the calculation that if they push back on “unrealistic” beauty, then they can sell more soap to people who don’t like that image and discredit their competition as shallow and evil. They are still trying to sell beauty, they are just repackaging it into something with a broader more accessible appeal.
Even if I am wrong, and they are just doing it because as company they feel it is the right thing to do. I cannot be ok with them making artist the villains when they have almost nothing to do with the decisions of a marketing department trying to sell a product.
